Passed in: Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: February 1st, 2011

Joan Elizabeth Churchill Bromley (nee Sircom), June 7, 1923-February 1, 2011, Wolfville, Nova Scotia, died peacefully at Harbour View Haven in Lunenburg surrounded by her family. Born in Regina, Saskatchewan to Jean Isabel (Cumming) of Toronto and Cecil Sircom of Halifax, she is survived by her dear brother Richard Sircom, children Eric, Ann, Peter and Michael Bromley (Kate Custeau), grandchildren Meghan (Simon Reinhardt) and Lliam Cole, and Kelsey and Sasha Custeau, great grandchildren Ivy Cole Reinhardt and Isabel Cole. Joan spent her early years in Calgary but the family returned to Halifax in the early 1930's after the death of her mother. Shortly thereafter her father was remarried to Marjorie Simson of Halifax. Her young life was marked by tragedy. The death of her mother and young brother Stevie in childhood always stayed with her. Joan attended Halifax Ladies College, Mount Saint Vincent Academy and Edgehill. In 1944 she married George Baranovsky (later Bromley) and settled in Wolfville. Widowed in 1956 with 4 small children, and faced with uncertainty, she pursued a Bachelor of Science graduating from Acadia University in 1962 and went on to attain her Bachelor of Education and Masters of Science. She taught in Kentville, then Windsor at Edgehill School (now Kings-Edgehill) where she became Headmistress. A natural athlete and avid outdoors woman she was a champion for the environment, involving herself in numerous causes amongst them organizing and attending a sit-in in her 82nd year to stop the clear cut of the Chester Basin watershed. Her grandchildren will cherish the memories of wilderness camping and canoe trips with her in Kejimkujik Park. Her sense of humour was boundless and she could find humour in the gravest of situations. Even on her deathbed she laughed. Despite more than her fair share of tragedy and adversity, Joan faced life with positivity and compassion and sought knowledge with a passion for learning. As in Life, she died with dignity and grace. She had a profound impact on the lives of all who knew her and will be greatly missed. A brief service will be held on Wednesday, February 9, at 11:00 AM at St. John's Anglican Church in Lunenburg, Rev. Linda Macdonald. A celebration of her life to be held in Wolfville will soon be announced. The family would like to thank the staff at Harbour View Haven for their loving kindness to our mother while a resident there. In lieu of flowers, please plant a tree, and donations can be made to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. Funeral Arangements are under the direction of the Dana L. Sweeny Funeral Home, 11213 Hwy. # 3, Lunenburg. www.sweenyfuneralhome.ca
