After a courageous battle with cancer Tom passed away at Hospice on July 4th, 2009 in Victoria, BC. Tom was born November 5th, 1936 in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Predeceased by parents, Edgar Thomas Ryan and Mary Grace Ryan (Beresh), sister Kathy Heidt and brother Ronald Ryan. Tom is survived by his wife, Heather (McKinnon) and children Tracy and Scott (Janet), family dogs Rocket and Webster, brothers Allen (Peggy), Lance (Connie), sister, Peggy (Milt) Crozier and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Tom began his career with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police and was stationed in Chemainus, Dawson Creek and Victoria, where he met Heather in 1957. In 1959 Tom and Heather married and moved to Vancouver where he joined the Vancouver Police Department. A highlight of his policing career was the years he served as the Sergeant of the Mounted Squad in Stanley Park. Throughout his career he was known for his quick wit, genuine caring, and dedication to the VPD. He rose through the ranks and retired as Inspector in 1993. He served on the Vancouver Police Credit Union Board of Directors for over 30 years and was President from 1979 to 1984. He approached everything in life with a positive attitude, a dry sense of humour and a twinkle in his eye.
A Celebration of life will be held on Saturday, July 18th from 2:00-4:00pm at Royal Colwood Golf Club. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation of Canada or Victoria Hospice.
