CAROLYN CANN

Carolyn was born April 27, 1943 at Grace Haven, Regina, Saskatchewan and passed away on March 1, 2011 at Portage District General Hospital at the age of 67 years. She was predeceased by her mother, Evelyn May Closs in February, 2004. Carolyn is survived by her stepfather, Alfred Claude Closs, Moose Jaw, SK; stepbrother Kevin & Edna Closs, niece Allison & nephew Adam, all of Winnipeg MB; stepbrother Rick Closs & Emelia Schiller, niece Alana & nephew Aaron, all of Shellbrook, SK. Carolyn received her schooling in Moose Jaw, SK where she took typing and shorthand. As a young girl Carolyn was described as fun loving and energetic. She had an outgoing nature and participated in many beauty pageants while living in Moose Jaw. Upon leaving school, Carolyn got a job at Loblaws, Dolmar Realty and then Safeway. She was working as a cashier at City Hall when she became ill with Encephalitis. Following this illness she was no longer able to care for herself. She was admitted to a training facility in Moose Jaw in 1966 where she stayed for seven years. When her family moved to Winnipeg, Carolyn was admitted to Manitoba Developmental Centre in February, 1973. Carolyn loved to listen to music. Her favourite singer was Patsy Cline. She enjoyed playing cards, especially Rummy, when she could beat the staff. Smoking DuMaurier cigarettes & drinking Coke were the greatest pleasures that she enjoyed. She would entertain everyone by singing the advertising jingles for these products. Carolyn also loved a nice hot cup of coffee with lots of sweetener. In December, 2008, Carolyn began having mobility issues and became dependent on a wheelchair to get around. In January, 2009 she was transferred to Westview where she was currently residing. Carolyn was well-known by many throughout the Centre and she will be missed. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, March 10 at 1:30 p.m. at the Aspen Center, MDC. The family would like to thank all the staff and friends at the Manitoba Development Centre for their ongoing care and support over the years.
