It is with heartfelt sadness we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother Rose Genevieve Orrell, age 94, on Monday, May 29, 2017 at the Northside Community Guest Home. Born in North Sydney, on October 8, 1922, Genevieve was the daughter of the late Salim and Catherine (Mutter) Kawaja.
In her earlier years she worked in the family wholesale business in Corner Brook, NL and later in North Sydney. She was a long time member of St. Joseph Church in North Sydney and while living in Sydney attended Our Lady of Fatima and St. Anthony Daniel Churches. She was a member of St. Vincent de Paul Society and for many years a member of the Ladies Auxiliary 562 Cabot Squadron Air Cadets. The greatest enjoyment in her life was supporting and spending time with her children and grandchildren. Genevieve is the last surviving member of her immediate family.
She is survived by her sons, Dr. Kevin (Anne), Dr. Sean (Bernadette), Dr. Liam (Georgia) Orrell, all of Sydney and her daughter, Catherine (Gary) Gallop, Sydney Mines; her 14 grandchildren, Jennie Orrell (Nolan), Najala (Phil) Brown, Victoria (Cole) Sanford, Kevin, Matthew, Floyd, Kelsey and Najala Orrell (George), Luke, Kathleen and Jared Orrell, Mark Gallop, Liam (Lisa) Gallop and Meghann (Shannon) O’Neill and also her six great-grandchildren, Dylan, Lydia, Johanna and Holden Gallop, Declan and Fergus O’Neill; and also by several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert; her daughter, Najala; her brother, Frederick; her sisters, Najala, Alma and Alexandra.
The family would like thank Dr. John Kirkpatrick and the staff at the Northside Community Guest Home for the excellent care shown to our mother.
Visitation for Genevieve will be held from 5-8:30 p.m. on Wednesday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
Funeral mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
