Passed in: Baddeck, Nova Scotia, Canada
Passed on: June 1st, 2017

It is with deep sadness that the family of Marguerite MacKenzie (Grezel), grieve her passing on Thursday, June 1, 2017 in the Alderwood Rest Home, Baddeck. Born on May 28, 1930 in Sydney, Marguerite (or Shoupie to those who knew her best) spent her adult years raising her family with her husband, Roy at various Military towns in Canada. Retirement brought everyone back to Whycocomagh, Cape Breton, where Shoupie enjoyed many occasions and laughs with her extended family and in service with the Lionettes. After living with dementia later in her life, Marguerite spent the past five years at Alderwood Rest Home, where staff lovingly cared for her during her most difficult hours. Even during these times, her wit remained intact, and a joke would light up her eyes and face with a smile. This was particularly evident during a visit from her grandchildren or in the presence of animals; both of which provided her with many happy moments. Marguerite leaves behind her sons, Glenn (Maryann) MacKenzie, Gary (Geraldine) MacKenzie; daughters, Terry (Craig) Gillis, Carole (John) Munro, along with grandchildren, Lindsey, Jonathan, Sean, Devon, Matthew, Jason, Meaghan, Blake, Christy, Garrett, and Callie, and her great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, Roy MacKenzie, and her special sister, Terry (Vernon) Walsh. In honour of Marguerite's wishes, there will be no visitation. A memorial funeral service will be held on Sunday, June 4, at 2 p.m. in Stewart United Church in Whycocomagh, officiated by Reverend Rachel Campbell. Burial to follow in Stewartdale Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Whycocomagh Waterfront Centre to assist with their efforts for seniors, or to the Alderwood Rest Home Recreation Program. The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Dr. Chow for his dedication, and to Susan MacNeil and the rest of the Alderwood staff for their compassion and care. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Chapel, Whycocomagh. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at www.haverstocks.com.
