Chesley Granter

Obituary for Chesley James Granter
Age 87 (1 Jul 1929 – 11 Jun 2017)

It is with profound and heavy hearts that the family of Chesley James Granter announces his sudden passing at James Paton Memorial Hospital 11 June 2017, just weeks short of his 88th birthday. Predeceased by father Samuel, mother Rhoda, wife of 61 years, Mona (Hussey), son Barry, sister Janet, and brother Wilmore. Left to mourn, son Brian (Anne Marie), Foxtrap NL, daughter-in-law Joan, Truro NS, brother Dom (Mary), Gander NL, three grandchildren in Nova Scotia, Karen (Billy Lunn), Adrian (Jennifer), and Nicholas (Marlaina), seven great-grandchildren, Bronwyn, Chantelle, Mattingly, Dylan, Chess, Callum, and Reese. Born in Middle Brook NL, Chesley moved to Gander in 1944 and worked for the RAF until the war was over. He then worked as an airport equipment operator from 1946 until his retirement in 1983. His lifelong passion was fly-fishing, which resulted in many adventures from the Northern Peninsula to Terra Nova River. His favorite fishing place was the Gander River where he used flies he tied to land many salmon. He was proud to teach his first grandchild, Karen, how to tie flies and to take her fishing. Though he admired her greatly, he didn’t get to keep many fish, as she wanted Poppy to let them all go so they could go back to their families. As well Adrian, his second grandchild was only too excited to have Poppy carry him on his shoulders and introduce him to the sport of fishing. Adrian still enjoys fishing today and has passed on the skill to his young son Dylan. A great fan of aviation, Chesley was thrilled when his third grandchild, Nicholas, became a pilot. He thoroughly enjoyed the post cards from all over the world that Nicholas sent him. He was always happy to hear from the family in Nova Scotia. He was more than thrilled when Nicholas came home last summer and introduced him to his newborn baby “Chess Granter” – what a privilege to be named after such a great man. Chesley was very saddened by the death of his eldest son Barry whose personality was much like his own – quiet, gentle and loved by all. His other son Brian, also quiet and gentle, spent much of the last few years with his father in Gander, keeping him company and spending quality time watching the Blue Jays and the Leafs. There is no greater gift a son could give his Dad then the gift of time. Brian’s wife was very understanding while Brian spent time away from home with his father. Barry’s family will be forever grateful to Brian and Anne Marie for all that they have done, especially in recent years. Chesley will always be remembered for his fishing skills, card playing skills, and enjoying a few spirits but mostly for his kindness, soft heart and gentle soul. He will be sadly missed; however, the family is happy that he is reunited with his wife, Mona, and his son Barry. (Give Mom Granter and Barry a kiss from all the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.) Everyone should be so lucky to have such a devoted son, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, husband and brother as Chesley Granter. The family extends their gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff at James Paton Memorial Hospital, Gander and Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander. Cremation has taken place and a service will be held in Ladle Cove NL at a later date.
