It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Mary Elizabeth (Hermack) Turnbull, 89, on Tuesday, June 13, 2017, at Ivany Place, Bedford, just shy of her 90th birthday. Born in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia on July 27, 1927, she was the daughter of the late Fred and Mary Ann (Tomiczek) Hermack.
Mary was a devout Roman Catholic who enthusiastically supported her Church, St. John the Baptist, New Aberdeen. She tirelessly contributed her time and energy to numerous charities in her parish and extended community. She was a long-time employee of Sears Canada, where she took great pride in providing outstanding customer service.
Mary is survived by her loving and adoring husband of 70 years, William (Bill); her daughters, Wendy O'Connor, Ottawa, ON, Beverly Levine, Truro, Valerie (Reeves) Matheson, Halifax, Pamela Turnbull, Vancouver, BC; son, Paul Turnbull, New Waterford; and brother, Frederick (Alice), New Market, ON. Mary will be dearly missed and forever cherished by her 12 grandchildren, Rachelle, Ryan, Mandy, Christopher, Paul Reeves, Andrew, Meaghan, Ian, Gary, Elizabeth, Thomas, Alexander, and by her 10 great-grandchildren, Rayne, Antonino, Jack, Max, Ryan, Kayla, Finn, Ivy Mae, Izzy and Lily. Mary is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents, Mary was predeceased by her son, Bill (2015); her brothers, Stephen, Alexander (Sonny) and her sister, Frances Gallant.
Mary will best be remembered for her unwavering devotion and commitment to her family. Throughout her life she was a pillar of strength for family and friends. But most of all, Mary created a lifetime of heartwarming family memories that will be dearly treasured and forever honoured as we carry on.
Cremation has taken place under the care and direction of Curry’s Funeral Home, Glace Bay. A Service of Celebration will be held at a later date in Cape Breton. In Mary's memory, donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
