Earl Dexter Hingley

Hingley, Earl Dexter – 91, Truro, passed away June 24, 2017 in the Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born June 18, 1926 in Kemptown, Colchester County, NS to William and Susan (McCabe) Hingley. He attended school in Kemptown and Salmon River after which he worked at various occupations – mechanical, carpentry, lumber woodsman, wheat farming in Western Canada, a brakeman with the CNR and a firefighter in Truro. Earl married Ethel Singer in July of 1947 and they have four children, David, Earleen (Terry) Leier, Janet (Mark) MacKenzie and Carole McClelland (John Spears), 12 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Earl worked as a fire inspector serving the Maritime Provinces from 1961 until his retirement in 1984. He was an active member of his community and church, serving on the Board of Elders at both the First Baptist Church in Truro as well as the McCulloch United Church in Camden. Earl was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002 for his outstanding and exemplary contributions to his community. He became a member of the Masonic Lodge in October 1968 and held the following offices, awards and degrees – Past Master, District Grand Chaplain, Scottish Rite, Meritorious Service Medal and 32nd Degree. Earl was predeceased by his wife, Ethel; parents, William and Susan; brothers, Parker, Russell, Ronnie and Preston; sisters, Marjorie, Annie, Bertha, Muriel, Norma and Eileen; and granddaughter, Sarah, in infancy. He is survived by his 4 children, 12 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, brothers, Ernest (Sylvia), Fleming (Grace), Robert (Pat) and Laurie (Carol) and sister, Maxine Shearer. Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 12 p.m. until 1 p.m. with a Masonic Service at 1 p.m. followed immediately by a Memorial service on Monday, June 26th, all in Colchester Community Funeral Home, 512 Willow St., Truro with Rev. Paul Worden officiating. Interment in Camden Cemetery. Donations in Earl’s memory may be made to the Colchester East Hants Palliative Care or to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.
