It is with sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Merrill Lewis, a long-time resident of North West Arm, on Saturday, July 1, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, at the age of 95. Merrill enjoyed a long and fulfilling life with his wife, Genevieve, who predeceased him in 2009.
Merrill was born on May 30, 1922 in Point Edward and was the son of the late Stanley and Margaret (Rudderham) Lewis. Merrill’s childhood and youth were spent happily on the family farm in Point Edward where he developed a love of the outdoors and gardening, this continued throughout his life. Merrill and Jenny took great pride in their property on Campbell’s Hill.
He was employed at CN Express for 41 years retiring in 1987.
Merrill was a caring, hard-working man who was devoted to his family.
He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl (Hector) MacSween; sons, Graham (Donna) Lewis and Gerald (Rosemary) Lewis, all of Edwardsville; grandchildren, Colin (Sarita), Gregory, Ainslie (Dan), Jeffrey, Laura, Jocelyn (Ryley), Liam (Kayla) and Scott; great grandchildren, Sophia, Priya, Kiran and Callan; brothers, Richard (Sandra) and Gilbert (Bernadine); sister-in-law, Shirley Lewis, Point Edward, and brother-in-law, Stanley (Kay) Henrich, North West Arm.
Merrill was predeceased by his wife, Genevieve (Henrich); brothers, Douglas and Leonard; sisters, Jetta, Mary and Isabel.
At the time of his death, Merrill was a resident of Harbourstone Enhanced Care and the family would like to thank the staff of Fisherman’s Cove for the dedicated and professional care provided during the past year.
Merrill was a member of Holy Rosary Parish, Westmount. Respecting his wishes, there will be no visitation. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5 at Holy Rosary Church, with Fr. Doug Murphy officiating. A reception will follow in the parish glebe house.
In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society of Nova Scotia, Canadian Diabetes Association or a charity of one’s choice.
