Born: March 1st, 1940

Passed in: NORTH SYDNEY
Passed on: July 7th, 2017

With sadness, we, the family of Edwin William Serroul, regret to announce his passing on Friday, July 7, 2017, at the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney.
Born March 1, 1940, in North Sydney, he was the son of the late Louis “Ben” and Susan (Rideout) Serroul.
For three years, Ed was a member of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCR, stationed in London, Ont. He was employed with the Public Works Department in North Sydney, retiring after 38 years of service. At this time, he returned to work for Macdonald's Backhoe and Trucking in North Sydney. Ed was an avid outdoorsman, who enjoyed motorcycling and trail blazing or exploring on his ATV. He would fish, hunt and cook while exploring and was well-equipped wherever he went. Ed particularly liked to travel to Newfoundland exploring the Trans Canada trail on his ATV with his good traveling companions. He also toured Newfoundland on his motorcycle and would venture into very difficult and secluded areas, which was his piece of Heaven on Earth. Other activities he enjoyed were skating and dancing. Ed took great pleasure in his morning coffee at Tim Horton's while talking with friends. He was well informed and enjoyed reading the Cape Breton Post, as well as watching Live at 5 and ATV Evening News. He was the family's very own meteorologist. For many years, he was a volunteer fireman with the North Sydney fire department.
Ed was a kind and gentle soul who was a great father and grandfather. He will be missed beyond words by his family.
Ed is survived by his wife, who he was devoted to for 56 years, Theresa (Beaton); daughters, Elaine and Laura Anne Serroul, North Sydney; sons, Louis Edwin, Calgary, Samuel David and John Hugh, both of North Sydney; sister, Charlotte, Texas; brothers, Bob, California and Lionel (Maureen), North Sydney; seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his brother, Hubert.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Kirkpatrick and Dr. Ron MacCormick for helping to extend his life with great quality over the past decade and discussing his adventures with him each and every visit. Ed was instrumental in living a high quality of life despite the diagnosis of stage three cancer. The family extends gratitude to the VON, all the nurses who have cared for Ed over the past ten years, palliative care and Dr. Ritter, who tried everything to alleviate the suffering associated with cancer. At the end of the day, he left this world his way and enjoyed his life to the fullest.
Cremation has taken place and a private service and interment will take place at a later date.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
