It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our dear mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Catherine Amelia “Gram” MacKinnon, on Monday, July 10, 2017, at Taigh Solas in the Northside General Hospital, North Sydney, just a month shy of her 103rd birthday.
Born in Sydney Mines on August 23, 1914, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Susan (McGowan) Gordon.
Gram was well known in Big Pond, having lived there for many years and was an active member of St. Mary Parish. She was a devoted homemaker who spent her life caring for others. She was proud to say that she raised four generations of her family, from her siblings to her great- great-grandchildren. Gram was the matriarch of the family who offered words of wisdom that were welcomed and respected.
Amelia was a woman of great faith. Her gentle way, kind heart and great love will be sadly missed by us all.
Gram is survived by her daughter, Sue Currie, Big Pond; her son, Layton (Marilyn) MacKinnon, Georges River; her five grandchildren, Edward, Beth, Michael, Bill, Heather; ten great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; her sister, Mary Rendell, Southside Boularderie; as well as her many nieces and nephews who were very special to her. Also surviving is her foster son, David (Linda) Williams and their five children and extended family of Lunenburg, NS.
She was predeceased by her husband, Reginald MacKinnon; son, William; son-in-law, Melvin Currie; three sisters, Elizabeth and two in infancy and five brothers, Alex, Tom, Bob, Greg, and Bill.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr. Paul Murphy, Dr. John Kirkpatrick and the staff of 4th floor and Taigh Solas at the Northside General Hospital for the care given to Gram while she was a resident there.
There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at St. Joseph Church, North Sydney with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating.
Burial will take place in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Church in Big Pond.
