NEWELL, Captain Herbert Clayton Sr. – 84, Voglers Cove, passed away Thursday, July 13, 2017. Herbert was born February 14, 1933, on the West side of Baccaro, NS, to the late Foreman and Mildred (Brennan) Newell. As a young child he was burdened with TB of the hip, which left him bed ridden from ages 3-7. Herbert taught himself to read and persevered with the limited use of one leg. He went on to be a successful fisherman, raised a family, and then became a fish buyer (SilverFin Fisheries). Herbert enjoyed traveling in his motorhome across Canada and the USA and wintering in Florida. Everyone that knew Herbert knew his love of sharing his life stories and the joy his grandchildren and great-grandchildren gave him. Herbert will be deeply missed. He is survived by son, Herbert Jr. (Amy), Cherry Hill; daughter, Wendy Haarstad (Ed), Lacombe, AB; sisters, Claudia Atkinson (Sheldon), Shelburne; Mildren Malloy (Maynard), Mill Village; brother, Gary Newell (Debra), Barrington; sister-in-law, Athalia; brother-in-law, Addison; grandchildren, Richie, Chantel, Clay, Melanie, Melissa, Herbert the 3rd, Colt, Rocky, Sydney, Cruz, Tiffany, Lawrence; and 13 great-grandchildren. Besides his parents, Herbert was predeceased by his first wife, Maureen; second wife, Lorraine; daughter, Shirley Greek; brother, Foreman Jr. Newell; and sister, Irene Atkinson. There was a visitation held Monday, 6-8 p.m., at the H. M. Huskilson’s Funeral Home, Barrington. The funeral service took place on Tuesday, July 18, 2 p.m., at the H. M. Huskilson’s Memorial Chapel, Barrington. Interment followed in the Woodside Cemetery, Port La Tour.
