It is with deep regret that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Arthena Joan Tobin, age 84, on Monday July 17, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in North Sydney on September 24, 1932, Arthena was the daughter of the late Arthur and Minnie (Ivey) Edmunds. Mom worked at various places from her teens to age 65 including BC Co-op, Sears, Stats Canada, Meloneys’ Foot Wear, Naturalizer (Sydney) and retiring from Marine Atlantic. Mom loved to travel with Dad and Derrick to Spain, Bermuda, Bahamas, and Florida. Arthena was a member of St. John the Baptist Anglican Church, North Sydney and served on several committees in the church. She loved to tend to her garden, knit, sew and bake and was a member of the North Sydney Pensioner’s Club.
She was predeceased by her husband of 32 years, Blowers (Fritz) Tobin; siblings, Valda, Ruth, Seward, Vernon, Gloria and Carol, and her companion of 18 years, Gerald Yetman, who with Mom spent many winters in Florida in their trailer.
Mom is survived by her four sons, Terry (Donna), Maurice, Troy (Rose) and Derrick; her grandchildren, Joshua, Blayre and Chance, also by her great granddaughter, Norah Catherine; sister, Georgina (Dennis) MacDonald; her brother, Lorne Roger (Bud) Edmunds, and special niece, Ruth Maloney who was like a daughter to Mom. Also surviving are nieces and nephews in Mass, USA and Nova Scotia.
Visitation for Arthena will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday from St. John the Baptist Anglican Church with Rev. Julio Martin officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney. Memorial donations may be sent to a charity of choice.
