Donald Stewart "Don" Dickie

DICKIE, Donald Stewart “Don” – 90, Truro, passed away peacefully on Monday, July 31, 2017, at Colchester East Hants Health Centre, Truro. Born in Lower Truro, he was a son of the late Angus and Bertha (Moore) Dickie. Don was a member of Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Truro. He began his career in the automotive industry with Blaikies and then worked at Terra Nova Motors in St. John’s, Newfoundland, and after returning to Truro in the 1950s, he continued his career with Studebaker and Volkswagon. An avid outdoorsman and sports enthusiast, he tried his hand at golf but quickly realized he liked tennis better. He was a long-time President of Truro Tennis Club and was recognized as Volunteer of the Year and described as “Mr. Tennis” for his valuable contributions to the club, its members and the level of play that happened there. He also enjoyed playing hockey with Truro District Hockey League. As well, he took great pleasure in gardening, both flowers and vegetables. Don is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Therese (MacKenzie); sons, Angus, Moncton; Dave, Steven, Truro; grandchildren, Amanda, Zane, Rodrigo, Diego; sister, Jean Blaikie, Wallace; “like brother”, Larry (Dawn) Dickie, Lower Truro; several nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was predeceased by his siblings, George Dickie, Yuill Moore, Annie Dickie, Dorothy Carter, Marie O’Hanahan. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro, where Don’s family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Friday, August 4, 2017. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m., Saturday, August 5, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 669 Prince Street, Truro, Father James O’Connor officiating. Reception will follow in Campbell Hall. Private interment in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, 125 Robie Street, Truro. Family flowers only. If so desired, donations in Don’s memory to Palliative Care Unit (CEHHC) are welcomed.
