HELEN MCLEOD

HELEN MCLEOD

Born in Donkin, Helen, 90, was the daughter of the late John W. and Jean (Robertson) MacLeod.
She grew up in Donkin attending Elementary and Junior High School and Morrison High School in Glace Bay. She was a graduate of the Glace Bay General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1948.
Helen was employed at Inverness Hospital then Camp Hill DVA Hospital in Halifax from where she enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force Medical Service. She served at bases across Canada as a Nursing Sister and had a wonderful four year posting to Germany where she enjoyed travelling across Europe, the U.K. and Middle East. Following her retirement from the RCAF in 1976 she was employed at the Devco Coal Preparation Plant.
A lifelong member of St. Luke’s United Church, Helen was active in CGIT, served as member and clerk of the Session, a member of the Board of Stewards and a ‘Friend of the U.C.W.’ She also enjoyed volunteering at the General Hospital as a Porter and at the Donkin Elementary School on ‘Hot Dog’ Days.
Helen loved to cook, bake, read, travel, swim in the ocean, the Boston Bruins, P.E.I and family gatherings, especially those in Mira. But the greatest joys of her life were her nieces and nephews. To have been part of their lives, watching them grow into fine young people was always a source of great pride. She thought they were all beautiful, clever and wise. Needless to say, her favorite title was ‘Aunt Helen’.
Helen was predeceased by brothers, David, John, Robert (Mary, Dorothy), Neil (Viola), Alex (Dena) and Donnie (Phyllis) and sisters, Annie (Verner Murrant), Wibby (Hayward MacMillan), Isabel (Cecil Clarke), Jean; brother-in-law, Hughie Reid; cousins, Mary Peach and Fraser MacLeod and nephews, Billie and Alexander MacMillan.
She will be sadly missed by sister, Ruth Reid; cousin, Margie Burbridge, Halifax; sisters-in-law, Lois and Gladys MacLeod and a large extended family of nieces and nephews.
Visitation for Helen will be held on Friday August 4, 2017 from 6-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St., Glace Bay. Funeral service will be held on Saturday August 5, 2017 at 11 a.m. in Patten Funeral Home Chapel.
