On August 11, 2017, Ian Alexander “Sandy” Mackay of Kings Head passed away peacefully at home. Son of Dr. Ian E. Mackay, MD and Annie Lillian (Buck) Mackay, RN.
Born February 4, 1944 in Mont Joli, Quebec, Sandy was raised in Stellarton from 6 months of age, where he attended church and was schooled in Stellarton and East Pictou Rural High.
He graduated in 1966 from Mount Allison University with a Bachelor of Science and the University of New Brunswick Law School where he graduated with an LLB in 1969. Sandy practiced law in New Glasgow for 48 years serving the people he knew and loved. Sandy articled with the Honorable Elmer M. Mackay, Q.C., and joined the firm of Mackay, Parker & White until he left to enter private practice on December 15, 1977, practicing as a sole practitioner in the general practice of law and acquiring his Queens’ Counsel in 1986.
Sandy devoured and retained information and could relate on many topics including motorcycles, firearms, fishing, hunting, boxing, genealogy, military and local history. Always analytical and objective, he could debate with a hidden grin. Only politics and international affairs drew his ire.
He is survived his son Shane Alexander (Jo-Ann) Mackay, King’s Head, NS and grandchildren James, Logan and Samantha, Taber, AB; his son Jay Ian Willoughby (Shelly) Mackay and grandchildren Kaleigh and Kelton, Charlottetown, PE; step daughter Dawn Leigh Green (Tony), Halifax, NS; siblings Franklin Charles, John Lionel “Jack” (Agnes), Dana Leigh (Peter), Colin Kent (Brie), and Lilla Isabel (Bruce), and his friend Pam MacDonald
Sandy was predeceased by his parents; his infant son Troy; his brother David Roy; his sister Jo Ann; and his loving and faithful companion of 30 years Judith “Judy” Irene Hennigar Green, October 20,1941 to March 31, 2008.
Sandy will be missed lovingly by all who knew and loved him; family, life-long friends, co-workers, business associates and clients alike.
Visitation will be from 2-4 and 7-9 pm on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow. Funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, August 17, 2017 in the H.W. Angus Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles McPherson presiding. Internment will be in the Brookside Cemetery. A reception will follow at First Presbyterian Church Hall, Stellarton.
