With sad hearts we the family announce the passing of John William McLeod, age 73, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on Monday, August 21, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Bras d’Or on August 8, 1944, he was the son of the late John James and Catherine (Swan) McLeod. John worked as a seaman in his younger years and later as a labourer in the construction industry until his retirement. He loved playing baseball and was a pitcher with the Bras d’Or Pirates. John was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing and hunting and also enjoyed berry picking. He was a member of St. Joseph Church in Bras d’Or. John is survived by his loving wife, Cleo (White) McLeod; his son, John (Barbara), Scarborough; his daughters, Lynn Davis (David Linn), Oshawa, Kate (Martin) MacKeigan, Lantz, Elaina MacDonald, Antigonish, Tanya McLeod (Wally MacRae), at home; his nine grandchildren, Justin, Katalyn, Jonathan, Courtney, Phillip, Kyle, Jonathan, John James, Maggie and one great-grandchild, Mattias. Also surviving are his sisters, Florence Moylan, Catherine Spezzano, Marilyn Ford, all in Conneticut, Kim (Urban) Day, Bras d’Or; his brothers, Dan (Sharon) MacLeod, Boularderie, Dennis MacLeod, Alder Point, Patrick MacLeod, Bras d’Or, Larry (Sharon) MacLeod, Sydney, Reggie MacLeod, Sydney Mines; his sister-in-law, Charlina MacLeod, Alder Point and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents John was predeceased by his sister, Anna Harvey; his brothers, George, and James; a sister, Laverna in infancy and son-in-law, Hugh MacDonald. There will be no visitation by request. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at St. Joseph Church, Bras d’Or, with Rev. Peter McLeod officiating. Arrangements are under the care and direction of W.J Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant Street, North Sydney.
