It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of Daniel MacNeil, age 97, a loving father, grandfather and great-grandfather, a resident of Brook Street, North Sydney, on Sunday, August 27, 2017 in the Veterans Wing at Harbourview Hospital, Sydney Mines.
Born in North Sydney on December 3, 1919, he was the youngest son of the late Roderick and Lucy MacNeil. He was a Second World War Veteran having served with the Signal Corps and H.Q. Armed Car Regiment and the R.C. Engineers and was a survivor of the D-Day Invasion. He served in France, Belgium, Holland, Germany and England. Daniel was a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch #19, North Sydney in which he served several terms as president as well as being active on various other committees such as the Veteran’s Comfort Fund. He was also involved in many volunteer committees in the community. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Church, North Sydney.
Daniel was employed for over 40 years with John C. MacMillan Lumber Ltd in North Sydney.
Daniel is survived by his daughter, Janice (Terry) Piercey, and son, Darren MacNeil; one grandson, Darren (Lindsay) Piercey, and two great-grandchildren, Olivia and Luke. Also surviving are his sisters-in-law, Sheila Curtis and family of Somerset, England, Donna Trussler, East Lawrencetown and Maude MacNeil of North Sydney, as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is his faithful companion ‘Smasher’.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Joan Trussler; his brothers, Hector (Rose), Joe (Allene) and John MacNeil, and one sister, Mary MacNeil.
The family would like to thank Dr. Doug Kohlsmith and the staff of the Harbourview Veterans Wing for the kindness, care and compassion given to Daniel.
Visitation for Daniel will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday in the W.J. Dooley Funeral Home, 107 Pleasant St., North Sydney. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Church with Rev. Patrick O’Neill officiating. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to the Veterans Comfort Fund.
