Died peacefully at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Residence, 2 O’Connor Drive on Wednesday, August 30, 2017 in the 65th year of her religious life.
Sister Irene was the daughter of Isabella Landrigan and John Butler of Salmonier–Burin, Newfoundland.
She is predeceased by her parents and two brothers, Jack and George Butler.
She is survived by her sisters: Susan, Frances, Jessica, Lillian (Mrs. Piceo),
Kathleen (Mrs. G. Taylor), Mary (Mrs. Fudge), Shirley (Mrs. Stapleton), and her brothers William, Owen, and Gordon Butler.
As a proud Newfoundlander, Sister Irene’s quick wit and warm personality will be sadly missed by her loving family, friends and Sisters in community.
Mary Irene Butler entered the Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto on February 10, 1952 and received the habit on August 15, 1952. Sister Irene made her first profession August 15, 1954. She celebrated her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.
Through her many years in the ministry of dietary services, Sister Irene lived well the call of the gospel “when I was hungry you gave me to eat”. (Matthew 25)
In recent years Sister Irene resided at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Residence, where she prayed for the needs of the world.
Visitation will take place at the Sisters of St. Joseph’s Residence, 2 O'Connor Drive, Toronto, Ontario on Friday, September 1, 2017, from 2:30 – 4:30 P.M.
with a Prayer Vigil at 7:00 P.M.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, September 2, 2017, at 10:30 A.M. Chapel, 2 O'Connor Drive, Toronto, Ontario.
Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
