Mary Genevieve ‘Gen’  Gillis

With great sadness the family of Genevieve Gillis, age 85, announces her passing on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 in the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Sydney, she was the eldest daughter of the late Hugh and Mary Gillis.
She attended Holy Angels High School and then St. Francis Xavier University graduating with a BSc in Home Economics in 1951. Later she received a diploma in public health nutrition at the University of Toronto. After a few years teaching at Riverview High School and at L’Ardoise, she was employed for more than thirty years as a public health nutritionist in the Nova Scotia Department of Health. After retirement from full time work, she served as a nutritionist in the Northside Community Guest Home. Gen was active in parish organizations, and in quilting and bridge groups. She was an avid gardener, and enjoyed spending time at the family bungalow at East Bay.
She is survived by brothers, Hugh (Doris) and Allan (Judy), and sisters, Clare (late Harvey MacEachern) and Carmel.
She was predeceased by brothers, Donald and Robert (Hannah), and infant sisters, Margaret and Leone.
Because of her thoughtfulness and generosity, Gen had many friends who will greatly miss her. She was a compassionate caregiver, especially to members of her extended family, and they will remember her for her kindness.
Visitation will be held 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. on Friday, September 8 at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, September 9 at 11 a.m. at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church with Fr. Bill Burke officiating. Burial will take place at St. Mary's Parish cemetery, East Bay.
