It is with heartfelt sadness that we the family announce the sudden passing of our loving mother and grandmother, Lena MacKenzie on September 7, 2017 at My Cape Breton Home for Seniors.
Born in Glace Bay she was the daughter of the late Nicholas and Abigail Stoliar.
In 1951 Lena married the love of her life, Walter; together they enjoyed traveling and spending time with family and friends at their home in Round Island. Mom and Dad enjoyed and lived life to its fullest.
Lena was very active in the Sydney Curling Club and Lingan Golf Club and a member of St. Mary’s Anglican Church. She was very well known for making sure everyone had some of her wonderful baked goods. Mom was very community minded she was a member of the I.O.D.E, many church groups and the Glace Bay Hospital Ladies Auxiliary. She was known to be there with a helping hand, to be very quick witted and had a wonderful sense of humour.
Lena is survived by daughters, Gail (Jim) Pemberton, Kim (Bruce) McLeod; son, Rob MacKenzie; three grandchildren, Ashley and Scott Gentile and Taylor Mackenzie whom she adored; sisters, Tamar (Patrick) Daye and Sherry (Don) Locke and brother, William (Florence) Stoliar; numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides parents she was predeceased by husband, Walter; sisters, Laura Cuzner, Mary Stoliar, Rose Blunden, Ann Baird and brothers, Nicholas and George.
Visitation for Lena will be held on Tuesday, September 12, 2017 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Patten Funeral Home 71 Union St, Glace Bay.
There will be a private family graveside service held at a later date.
Donations may be made to Glace Bay Hospital Ladies Auxiliary at the gift shop or St. Mary’s Anglican Church.
