M. Bernadette ‘Bernie’  Merritt

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our dear sister, aunt and friend, Bernie Merritt, age 98, on Sunday, September 17, 2017, at the Northside Community Guest Home.
Born in Sydney Mines on July 4, 1919, she was the daughter of the late Hillary J. and Adele (Babineau) Merritt.
Bernie worked as a governess in her younger years before joining the Canadian Women Army Corps (CWAC) and served overseas during and after, the Second World War.
Upon her return to Canada, she became a school teacher and taught in Sydney Mines, Alder Point schools, retiring from St. Joseph Elementary in Sydney Mines.
Bernie is survived by her siblings, Enid Williams, North Sydney, Kelvin Merritt of Sydney Mines, Delores (Ernie) Tobin of Kingston, ON, Pauline Monohan of Ontario, Jacqueline (Kevin) Armstrong of North Sydney and William H. (Emma) Merritt of Sydney Mines. Also surviving are several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by two sisters, Geraldine Kerbs and Elaine Cole.
There will be no visitation by request. A Funeral Mass will be held 10 a.m. Thursday, at St. Joseph Church North Sydney, with Rev. J.J. MacDonald officiating. Burial will follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, North Sydney.
Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice.
