New Glasgow/Little Harbour - Dorothy Elma (Cottie) MacLeod, born in Stellarton on July 11, 1925 to parents, James Edward Cottie and Emma Jane (Edwards) Cottie, passed away Friday, September 22, 2017, in the Aberdeen Hospital.
She graduated from Stellarton High School. A registered nurse, she graduated from Victoria General Hospital School of Nursing in Halifax in 1948, where she was a gold medalist of the class and led the province in the Provincial Nurses Registration exams that year. Her nursing career spanned 40 years during which she held nursing supervisory positions at the VG in Halifax, in Boston and the Aberdeen in New Glasgow. She retired from the Glen Haven Manor nursing home as afternoon supervisor. She was a member of the Little Harbour Presbyterian Church, organist for 20 years and long-time member of the choir and a former member of the Ladies’ Aid of the church, and president of the AMS for many years. She was governor of the Prayer Chain and active in all church activities.
Music played a big part in her life – member of several choral groups and a soloist in many churches in Pictou County. Along with partner, Roberta Morrow (an alto), they sang duets for many years in churches and gatherings throughout the county.
Dorothy was a volunteer worker at the Food Bank for many years. Other volunteer work included Blood Donor Clinic and the Aberdeen Hospital Gift Shop. She was a member of the Pictou County Ukulele Group and Secretary Charter Member of Glen Haven Manor Auxiliary.
Crafts included oil painting – member of former Kitchen Painters Group, cross stitch and needlework. Reading was a major past time! Historical novels, mysteries, religious – you name it! Crossword puzzles, word puzzles of all kinds – the daily lexicon, but numbers – Sudoku – no way!!
She was predeceased by her mother, father, four sisters and two brothers, husband, G.F. “Bud” MacLeod and several nieces and nephews. Survived by daughter, Leanne (MacLeod) Davis, granddaughter Alanna Davis, sister-in-law, Isabel (late Joe) McLean, and many nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation by request. Memorial service to be held at Little Harbour Presbyterian Church at 2 pm Wednesday, with Rev. Lorne MacLeod and Rev. Pat Rose officiating, with reception to follow in the church hall. Family committal service of cremated remains to be in Church Brook Cemetery at a later date.
