With sadness, we, the family of David Wayne Gilholm, regret to announce his passing on Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born August 9, 1941, in Port Morien, Dave was the son of the late John and Isobel (Orr) Gilholm.
Dave was a graduate of Mount Allison University, pursuing a career in the ministry by supplying in various churches across Canada. He counselled at a school in Alberta and later worked as a rehabilitation counselor with the Canadian Paraplegic Association in Halifax. In Cape Breton, he was the owner of Dave’s Texaco in Reserve and Bras d’Or, as well as, Napa Auto Parts in New Waterford. Dave promoted organ donation having been a heart transplant recipient 31 years ago. He was an avid hockey fan, an exercise buff, and loved music; playing the guitar and organ for his own enjoyment. He was a member of the Keltic Male Chorus. Dave was a devoted father (the best dad in the world!) and a loving husband. He had a big heart for those in need.
Dave is survived by his wife, Deanna (Drover); daughter, Allyson, Sydney; son, Christopher (Emily), Toronto, Ont., and sister, Catherine Miller, USA.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Margie Mitchell and Gladys MacDonald, and brother, John ‘Jack’ Gilholm.
There will be no visitation. Funeral service will be held at United Heritage Church, (corner of Charlotte St. and Townsend St.) on Saturday, October 7 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Rosemary Godin and Rev. Allan MacLellan officiating. Interment in Forest Haven Memorial Gardens at a later date.
Memorials may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Nova Scotia or a charity of your choice.
