Doreen Ann MacKay

MacKAY, Doreen Ann – 70, Bible Hill, passed away peacefully, with loving family at her side, on Thursday, October 12, 2017, at VG Site, QEII, Halifax. Born in Truro, she was a daughter of the late Purdy and Olive (MacMillan) McKenna. Doreen worked for over 20 years as a caregiver at Maplewood Manor in Tatamagouche and retired in 2012. She had a soft spot in her heart for animals and rescued and cared for many over the years. She was an avid walker and loved going to Rushton’s Beach and Nelson’s Park with her best friend of over 60 years, Beryl McNutt; their daily adventures weren’t complete until they stopped and shared a coffee and tea at Tim Hortons or elsewhere. Doreen is survived by her sons, Robert “Robbie”, Milton, Ontario; Jeff (Heather), Murray Siding; Trevor (Amanda), Bible Hill; grandchildren, David and Keira, who affectionately called her “Purple Grammy”; brothers, Ivan (Alice) McKenna, Valley; Earl (Tineke) McKenna, Bible Hill; brother-in-law, James Moore, Truro; nieces, Laverne (Andy) McDaniel, Dartmouth; Sarah McKenna, Bible Hill; nephews, Terry Moore, Onslow Mountain; Christopher McKenna, London, England. Along with her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, David Richard MacKay; sister, Ruth Moore. Special thanks are extended to Dr. Danny French and the entire care team of Floor 6A, Centennial Building, VG Site, QEII, for their outstanding efforts and support. Honouring Doreen’s wishes, there will be no visitation or service by request. If so desired, donations in Doreen’s memory to Colchester SPCA are welcomed. Arrangements have been entrusted to Mattatall – Varner Funeral Home, 55 Young Street, Truro.
