Shirley Anne (Sinclair, Hingley) Melanson of Riverview, Florida, formerly of New Glasgow, died Sept. 24, 2017, in Florida, following an exhausting illness.
Shirley was born Feb. 23, 1943 to Reginald Robbins Sinclair and Ida Sylvia Laffin in Moncton, New Brunswick. She grew up in Nova Scotia and lived in Quebec for some years before returning to New Glasgow in the 1960s.
She was predeceased in 2016 by her husband of almost 45 years, Chester “Hooley” Melanson, and earlier by her parents and by her step-father John Laffin.
She is survived by sons Chester Melanson (Amanda), Florida, and Reginald Warren Hingley (Sonia), Toronto, ON; daughters Heather Anne Hingley Vasko (Stephen), Winnipeg, MB, and Susanne Elise Hingley Alford (Mark) in Whitehorse, YT; grandchildren Amelia Kathryn, Lincoln Chester and Freddy Delaney Melanson of Florida; John Vincent and Kalyna Sinclair (Claire) Hingley of Etobicoke; Huxley Ewart Hingley Alford of Whitehorse; step-children James Melanson, Pamela Cain and Shannon Melanson of Ontario; and her first husband Warren Robert Hingley.
Shirley graduated from the Aberdeen School of Nursing as a mature student, and moved with her husband and youngest son to Florida, where she nursed for 20 years before retiring. As matriarch, she embraced Florida life and welcomed her extended family, especially her grandchildren, and her friends to enjoy the experience with her. A master newspaper clipper who loved gathering and experimenting with new recipes, a veteran shopper online and in stores, an eager tourist, and a consummate decorator for Christmas and other holidays, Shirley loved sweets, bright colours and sparkles. She lived life fully, and kept her sense of humour to the end.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Shirley’s life will take place in Pictou County in the summer of 2018. For further information on this event, contact susannehingley@hotmail.com.
In memory of Shirley, donations may be made to the Victorian Order of Nurses (www.von.ca)
