On Wednesday October 25, 2017, Helen Ann (Pendleton) Cairns, RN, of Lower Freetown aged 84 years, died peacefully at the Prince County Hospital. Born in Kensington, July 9, 1933, daughter of the late Sylvanus and Erena (Foster) Pendleton. Helen was the beloved wife of William Cairns for almost 60 years. Mother of John (Eva), James (Janet) and Malcolm. Grandmother to Christopher. Sister-in-law of Jean Pendleton, Ernie Spurgeon, Helen (Vernon) Millar, Georgina (Doug) Ferguson, Louise (Don) McConaghy, Amy Borys and Rev. William McDowell. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews. Predeceased by two sisters, Betty Spurgeon and Sylvia (Melvin) Willis, both of Calgary, Alberta, and brother Roscoe Pendleton of Kensington. Also predeceased by sister-in-law Winnifred McDowell and brother-in-law Peter Borys, both from the Ottawa area. Graduated in nursing from the PEI Hospital in 1954. Former head of the Isolation Unit at the PEI Hospital. Longtime Sunday School teacher and leader in the 4-H Club. Helen's other interests included gardening, farming, community life and cooking big meals for her family and visitors. Resting at the Davison Funeral Home, Kensington, with visitation on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral services Tuesday from the Freetown United Church at 2 p.m. Interment to follow at the North Bedeque Cemetery.
