It is with great sadness the family of Fr. Lloyd Cornelius Dwyer announces his passing on Saturday, October 28, 2017 after a brief illness. Fr. Dwyer passed away in An Cala Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
He was born February 27, 1931 in New Glasgow, NS. He was the son of the late John and Catherine (Murphy ) Dwyer.
Fr. Lloyd is survived by his sisters, Anne (Bill) Nobes, White Rock, BC, Verna Dwyer, Comox, BC; and brother, Kevin (Lois), Whitby, ON; as well as many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He was predeceased by siblings, Andrew, John and Helen Chouinard.
A graduate of Normal College, Truro, he taught in Ingonish, Cape Breton for 3 years. Father Dwyer then went on to obtain his undergraduate degree from St. Francis Xavier University, and then pursued Religious studies at St. Paul University in Ottawa. Fr. Dwyer was ordained for the Diocese of Antigonish in June, 1960. He then went to teach for 3 years at S. Pius X prep. Seminary in Ottawa. Over the next 13 years he served parishes in Sydney, North Sydney and West Bay – during his time in West Bay he also taught school.
In 1973, Fr. Lloyd returned to study Pastoral Care at St. Paul University. In 1974 he began serving the community as Chaplain of St. Rita Hospital, Sydney City Hospital, Cape Breton Hospital and later Cape Breton Regional Hospital, retiring in 1997. In his younger days, Fr. Lloyd loved to jog and continued to be an avid walker in the North End of Sydney, always greeting everyone he met on the way.
Fr. Lloyd was gifted in his service to others through Pastoral Care. A very kind and caring man, he loved to sit and chat with people, he always had an open mind and heart for all and especially those who needed it most. Fr. Dwyer felt everyone needed someone to just say hello. He also loved a good story and readily shared a good laugh with many.
Visitation for the late Fr. Lloyd Dwyer will take place 2 – 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017 at T. W. Curry Parkview Chapel, Sydney. Vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. also on Wednesday, Nov. 1 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church.
Bishop Brian Dunn will preside over the Mass of Christian Burial along with priests of the diocese at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 2 at St. Marguerite Bourgeoys Church. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery, Sydney Forks.
