Margaret Sutherland Haynes -64, of Greenhill, Pictou County, passed away Tuesday October 17th 2017 in the Victoria General Hospital, Halifax with Raymond, Michael and Catherine at her side. She was the elder daughter of the late Gilbert and Evelyn Sutherland, Stellarton. Margaret grew up in Stellarton; graduated from Stellarton High School; and attended Pictou Regional Vocational School, Stellarton. She worked at Crescent Jewellers and at Avco Finance. In 1976 Margaret began her banking career with Scotiabank, Stellarton, retiring in 2007 as a Senior Financial Advisor. She earned her Financial Counselling and Financial Planning and an Associate of ICB designations through the Institute of Canadian Bankers. Margaret’s passions were her family foremost; along with quilting, reading, swimming, kayaking, and the many summers that she and Raymond camped in PEI. Over her lifetime, Margaret did volunteer work for many organizations. In recent years, she was the Secretary for the Pictou West Progressive Conservative Association; and the Secretary for the Alma Fire Department Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband and best friend of 42 years, Raymond Haynes; sons, Burton Nowlan (Dana), Courtenay, BC; and Michael Haynes (Tiffany), Greenhill; grandchildren, Tarron Nowlan (Laniah), BC; Anika Nowlan, Courtenay, BC; Katelyn, Leah & Jessica Haynes, Greenhill; step-grandchildren, Kim, Carter & Keiran, BC. Also surviving are her sister, Catherine Emmerson (Gordon), Whitby, Ontario; her brother, Art Sutherland (Teresa), Victoria, BC; sister-in-law, Susan (Ted) Embree, Lorneville, NS; and a number of nieces and nephews. No funeral will be held at Margaret’s request. A time of laughter (not tears) to celebrate Margaret’s life will be held at the Alma Fire Hall on November 4th from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Dress casually, eat, drink and be merry!
Donations in her memory may be made to the Alma Fire Department Auxiliary, the Stewart Cemetery (this would be a non-charitable donation), or a charity of your choice. Private family burial will be in the Stewart Cemetery, West River Station at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of McLaren Funeral Service, Pictou.
