John Victor Calver

Born: April 24th, 1945

Passed on: October 30th, 2017

Passed away peacefully after a full and rewarding life, John Victor Calver, age 72. John embraced every experience and shared his love, wit and stories with family, friends and people throughout the province and the country during his long broadcasting career. Leaving with cherished memories, his wife of 25 years, Jo-Ann Dooley; daughters Tara, Mandy and Emma; sons-in-law Mike Gerald and Pete Davidson; darling grandson Rowan Davidson; sister Peg Pearce; niece Debbie; nephews David and Jonathan Pearce and families; mother-in-law Barbara Dooley; sisters and brothers-in-law Tish Dooley and Loyola O'Brien, Barbara Dooley and Gordon Newhook and Tom and Lisa Dooley; nephews and nieces Noah, Kathleen, Patrick and Daniel O'Brien, Ryan and Kierra Dooley. John was the son of the late Victor and Jean Calver. As a boy he spent summers in his beloved Manuels where he explored sea and shore and developed his passion for the culture and history of Newfoundland. He found his true calling when he began reporting for CBC in the late 60's. His career took him around the world, but what mattered most to him was telling the stories of Newfoundlanders. He often said he was getting paid to do what he loved. His career included covering pivotal stories including the cod moratorium and the Ocean Ranger disaster. John was a loving husband and devoted dad to his three girls who he always guided with a gentle hand and supported with his whole heart. He was an avid hiker, camper, sailor and gardener. His great meals were legendary among friends. In later life he worked in tourism and delighted in sharing the history and legends of our province with hundreds of visitors. Our heartfelt thanks to all our family and friends who provided so much support during John's illness - from meals, to rides, to housework, yard work and everything else. We could not have gotten through this without you. We also thank the compassionate staff at the Palliative Care Unit and Eastern Health as well as close friend Dr. Karl Misik. Son, husband, father, grandfather, storyteller and most importantly a great listener. John will be missed by all who loved him so dearly. A Memorial Service will be held on Friday, November 3rd, 2017 at St. Mary's Church on Craigmillar Avenue at 2 pm, with a Celebration of Life to follow at 7 pm at Bowring Park Bungalow, stories and instruments welcome. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to The Health Care Foundation at healthcarefoundation.ca in support of the Palliative Care Unit or The Canadian Cancer Society.
