Vergie Wilson –Truro.
In sadness and love the family of Virginia “Vergie” Miriam Wilson announces her passing Friday, November 10, 2017 in her hundredth year of life. Mum was born May 16, 1918 and was the daughter of the late Elsie and Justus Nason in Tracy, New Brunswick, where she grew up with 2 sisters (Nellie and Pearl) and 2 brothers (Eugene and Russell). She married Edward Nesbitt Wilson at the age of 17 and went on to have six children living most of their lives in Truro, Nova Scotia. Mum was a loving mother and wife staying home to bring up her children. She was a creative person-sewing for her children-their clothes and also drapes, curtains, slip covers and beautiful quilts-always working hard to create a pleasant, comfortable home for them to grow up in. She was also an expert in preparing jams and pickles every year to get us through the winter. Throughout her life she had a keen interest in playing bridge weekly with her neighbours and friends and indeed taking the time after church on Sundays to teach her children to play the game. She also loved her crossword puzzles, cryptogram and scrabble. She actually wore out dictionaries in her pursuit of solutions. A good novel was also a constant companion. Mum, a lifelong Liberal, was keen to help out in provincial and federal elections for years, working as a returning officer and even setting up election polls in her home. She was a firm believer that elections should still be done by hand counted paper ballots. Of her six children, Mum is survived by two daughters, Margaret Rose (Ian Oulton) and their son Robert, deceased (2017) their daughter, Krista, and her children, Asher and Lexie. Her youngest daughter, Valerie Jean (Larry Thomas) and their children, Matthew and Anthony. Vergie’s last surviving sister is Nellie Brawn of Wirral, New Brunswick. She was pre-deceased by her brothers Eugene and Russell and sister Pearl of Tracy and Fredericton, New Brunswick. Mum was predeceased by her husband, Edward Wilson, in 1967 after a lengthy illness (Alzheimer’s disease), her daughters Karen Oulton (1985), Deanna MacDonald (2004), and Maxine Mackinnon (2009) (Jack Mackinnon deceased 2017) and her son Edward (1994). She is survived by Edward’s (Alice Wilson) children, Erin and her daughter Rebecca, Andrew and his son Noah, Katy, Amy (Jamie) and her children Jaden, Leland, and Caleb, Karen Ann(David) and her children Jaina, Joseph, and Emory, Ted and Peter; Karen’s Children, Susan (Andrew Ayer), her children Louis, Arlo and Ella, Lisa and her children Oliver and Alasdair; David deceased 2017 (Rose Bourt) and stepson Matthew; Deanna’s Children Sean, Stephanie and her children Christopher, Isabella, Jane and Veronica, Tricia and her children Chloe and Chandler, and Becky (Randy Williamson) and her children, Andreas, Katie and Natalie; Maxine’s children Alex (Sue) and children Anna and Caroline, David (Adrienne) and their children Stephanie and Ian, Joanne (Dan Troke) and her children Danny, Laura and John. It was very sad and difficult for mum to experience the loss of four of her children and two of her grandchildren before her own demise. Nevertheless, she was a loving grandmother always keeping her home open for visits and perhaps even a game of scrabble. A favourite of hers was Neil Young and in particular his song ‘Long May You Run’-not surprising. Although her chair is empty, she will forever be loved and cherished by her daughters, her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. The family would like to give a special thanks to all the home care support workers through the VON that made her life in her own home enjoyable and possible and the constant care and concern of her housemate and grandson Sean. There will be no service at this time but on May 16, 2018 (her 100th birthday) her family will have an afternoon together to celebrate Mum’s life, remembering the good, the loving and the sad times we’ve shared with her. (Maybe even a table or two set up for bridge and scrabble.) She will be dearly missed but never forgotten. In lieu of donations, give flowers to anyone in need.
