It is with deep sorrow and a great sense of loss that the family of Sister Sara Christine Beaton and the Sisters of the Congregation of Notre Dame announce the passing of Sister Christine on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital after a brief illness.
Sister Christine was born in Harbour View, Inverness County, on May 4, 1928. She was the daughter of Murdoch Beaton and Mary Christina MacDonnell.
Her early education took place in Harbour View School and St. Joseph Convent, Mabou and she completed her higher education in St. Francis Xavier University and in Orano, Maine.
She entered the Congregation of Notre Dame, Montreal, in 1947 and made profession in 1949. Her teaching career spanned thirty-five years in Nova Scotia schools, including New Victoria, River Ryan, Sydney Mines, Truro and Colchester East Hants. She retired in 1984, at which time she worked as a System Reading Consultant. Sister Christine was recognized by the Department of Education of Nova Scotia as an Innovative Teacher.
She served in a Leadership role at Holy Redeemer Convent, Sydney from 1985-1988. After her retirement she devoted ten years to pastoral service at the IWK Hospital for Sick Children, Halifax.
After her teaching career Sister Christine took advantage of extensive travel, relying on the words of the poet Browning: “Grow old along with me! The best is yet to be…Our times are in His hands.” Christine was a lover of God’s creation, the countryside, culinary arts, painting and particularly the Scottish culture. In 2011, she moved to Parkland Cape Breton where she resided with her CND community.
Sister Christine was predeceased by her parents and by her sisters, Florence Beaton CND, Philomena VanSavage (John), Mary Isabel Beaton and brothers, John Joseph (Betty), Donald Anthony (Mary A.), Neil Cyril (Kathleen) and Winfred (Margaret). She is survived by her sister, Lillian Csordas (Steve) in Millbrook, ON and sister-in-law, Peggy Beaton. Sister Christine will be missed by many loving nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 4- 8 p.m. on Friday, November 17, 2017 at Port Hood Resting Place.
Funeral will take place on Saturday, November 18, at 11 a.m. at Saint Peter’s Church in Port Hood with Father Vincent Van Zutphen officiating, followed by burial in St. Peter Cemetery, Port Hood. A reception will follow at St. Peter’s Parish Hall.
