SIMMONDS, Dorothy Gloria (nee: Ogden)

Former resident of New Horizons Community of Care in Campbell River, B.C., Gloria Simmonds passed away peacefully at the Campbell River and District General Hospital on April 23, 2011, age 78. Gloria was born in Swan River, Man. on September 5, 1932 and was the only child of Arthur and Bertha (nee: Curtis) Ogden. Gloria was raised in the Hudson Bay, Sask. area and in Regina, Sask. where she attended the Qu’Apelle Diocesan School and Reliance School of Business, both in Regina. She was a secretary for the Manufacturers Life Assoc. until she married Tom Simmonds in 1951. Gloria was a devoted mother to her five children. She and her family lived in Regina, Saskatoon, Grenfell, Yorkton, Rosetown, Prince Albert, all in Sask. After her children were grown she worked for Home Care and Nursing Homes in Prince Albert and Regina. She enjoyed visits with her grandchildren, raising horses, dancing and travel. Gloria and Tom retired in Campbell River, B.C., before she moved to Parksville, BC. Predeceased by her parents and former husband Tom. Gloria is survived by her loving children Kim (Debbie) from Wakaw, Sask., Darrell (Cathy) from Campbell River, BC, Shirley (Winston) Toudy from New Westminster, BC, Linda (Gordon) Rempel from Saskatoon, Sask., and Averil of Regina, Sask. She will be lovingly remembered by her grandchildren Barbara, Kristin (Darren), Tara (Ron) Gaudet, Tom, Amy (Doug), Brennan, Chad (Krista), Andrea, and Kendra; and great-grandchildren Natasha, Brandin, Hilary, Nicolas, Ava, Emily and TJ. Gloria is survived by brothers-in-law Robert Simmonds and Ron Porter. A celebration of Gloria’s life was held on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Sutton’s Campbell River Funeral Home, 502 South Dogwood St., Campbell River, BC. The interment of cremated remains will be in the Veteran’s Cemetery, HMCS Naden, Esquimalt, BC at a later date.
