Roy ‘Jake’  Denny

With heavy hearts we regret to announce the death of Roy A. ‘Jake’ Denny on November 28, 2017 peacefully at home surrounded by family.
Jake was born in Eskasoni First Nation, NS on October 7, 1946. He was the son of the late Michael R. and Mary Bella (Herney) Denny.
Jake was a survivor of the Shubenacadie Indian Residential School from 1951 to 1959. In 1977 he started working for the Boston Indian Council as a driver, transporting elders and youth to various programs and later took on the position of president of the BIC. In 1983 he moved home to Eskasoni to start a family, marrying Barbara Paul in June of 1986. In 1992 he was one of the people involved in organizing the first Pow Wow in Eskasoni. He worked as an Addictions Councillor and in the most recent years, worked as a janitor with the Eskasoni School Board.
Jake enjoyed being outdoors, hunting and fishing. The skills and tricks of the trade he acquired from these he was happy to pass on to his children and grandchildren. He also had a love of music. He enjoyed playing his guitar, singing and karaoke.
Jake is survived by his wife, Barbara (Paul); children, Chrisma (Oliver), Eskasoni, Matthew, Holbrook, MA, Michael R. (Koran), Eskasoni and Sulian (Trudy), Eskasoni; grandchildren, Auriel, Oliver, Jack, Christopher, all of Eskasoni, Cassidy, Alanna, Holbrook, MA and Aidan, Spencer, Shenayah, Julie, Jaina, Jacen all of Eskasoni. He is also survived by his sisters, Euphemia ‘Bea’ Miller (Jesse), Augusta, ME, Ruby Poulin (Gerard), Augusta, ME, Jessie Denny, Paqtnkek and Georgina Doucette, Eskasoni, and by many nieces, nephews, godchildren and his special buddy Danny.
He was predeceased by his siblings, Irene Herney, Leona Denny, Matthew Denny and Mary Rita Denny.
Visitation for Jake will start at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 2 at the Gabriel Center, Eskasoni. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, December 4 at 10:30 a.m. at Holy Family Church with Fr. Martin MacDougall officiating. Interment in the Holy Family parish Cemetery, Eskasoni.
