Clara Russell (nee Smallwood)

Passed on: April 30th, 2011

January 7 1930 - April 30, 2011. With heavy hearts and great sadness, we announce the passing of a wonderful mom and grandmom, Clara Russell, aged 81, at the Carbonear General Hospital. Clara was predeceased by her husband, Edward James Russell, on April 17, 1973, whom she adored until her death, and together they began Russwood Ranch in May 1951 at Roaches Line. Predeceased also by her parents, Honourable Joseph R. and Clara (Nee Oates) Smallwood, and brother William. Leaving to mourn and cherish her time with us are daughter Dale and her husband Tom FitzPatrick, grandson Jamie of North Bay, ON, and granddaughter Ashley of Petawawa, ON. They were her pride and joy, and she their biggest fan. Brother Ramsay (Mabel) Smallwood of Roaches Line, sisters-in-law Lillian (Russell) Tilley in Mississauga, ON, and Marcella Smallwood, Roaches Line, as well as a large extended family of cousins, nieces and nephews. Special, life-long friends Kathleen and Shirley Gough, and Rita MacDonald brought great joy to Clara since she was 5 years old and especially the past 4 1/2 months while recovering from a serious car-pedestrian accident on December 16, 2010. Clara received wonderful care and friendships made at the ICU and Neurosurgery Units at the Health Sciences Centre and we would like to thank the medical staff for the “miracle” and gift of having Mom with us these extra months. Clara will be remembered for her skillful and chatty management of The Farm House Restaurant and Dairy Bar from 1965 up to the mid-1990s. Resting at Moore’s Funeral Home, Water Street, Bay Roberts. Visitation on Monday and Tuesday from 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. - 9 p.m., Wednesday from 10 a.m. to noon. Funeral service 2 p.m. from the Brigus United Church. Interment to follow at the St. George’s Anglican Cemetery, Brigus. Flowers gratefully accepted in memory of this avid gardener or donations may be made in Clara’s memory to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter.
