William Weldon ‘Bill’ Nicoll

It is with profound sadness that we, the family of William Weldon ‘Bill’ Nicoll, 97, announce his passing on December 16, 2017, at Taigh na Mara Nursing Home, Glace Bay. Born in Mira Gut June 19, 1920, he was the son of the late Capt. Joseph M. and Sophia ‘Sophie’ M. (Spencer) Nicoll.
Raised in Mira Gut, Bill was a veteran of the Second World War serving four years with the Royal Canadian Engineers, in England and Northwest Europe. In addition to his service medals, he was awarded the French Legion of Honour Order of Merit and the Dutch medal, in recognition of his service to the liberation of both countries. Following the war, Bill attended Acadia University and graduated with a B.Sc. in geology. He was employed with the International Nickel Company of Canada (INCO, later Vale) in Thompson, Manitoba, retiring to his home in Mira Gut in 1977.
Bill is survived by his brother, Ken (Marie) in Fort Worth, Texas; his sister, Carol (Jim) Pinhey in St. Margaret’s Bay, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers, Irvine (Ethel), Charlie (Gloria), Wes (Anna) and Bert (Libby); his sister, Eva (George) Macvicar, and a nephew, Charlie Nicoll.
The family wishes to thank Taigh na Mara staff, as well as County Homemakers, New Dawn Housekeeping and the VON for making it possible for Bill to remain in his home in Mira Gut for several years.
As per Bill’s wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation or funeral service. A private family burial of his ashes will take place at the Mira Bay Baptist Cemetery, Mira Gut, at a later date.
