Linda Nugent

Born on Mother's Day 1951 in Amherst, Nova Scotia, Linda died surrounded by family on December 18, 2017 in Saint John, New Brunswick. The middle child of her late parents, Douglas Frederick and Elizabeth Anne (Fleming) Trewin, she is survived by her husband of 33 years, John Lawlor Nugent, their children, Catherine Elizabeth (Beth) (Nicholas Donnelly) of Ottawa, and John Trewin (JT) of Saint John, as well as her siblings Mary Wiles (Gordon Cranton), Nancy (Douglas Heffel), Billy (Jane McKnight) and Kerry. Linda was a partner nonpareil, a supportive and encouraging mother, a faithful friend, a respected colleague, and altogether a smart, generous and wise person. Linda’s family was a source of joy and contributed to the welcoming and supportive home she cherished. Linda attended a one-room school house in West Amherst, NS and graduated high school in Parrsboro, NS as one of a class of 12. These formative years in small communities shaped her kind, genial nature, keen interest in people of all ages, and overall joie de vivre. Always on-the-go, west siders regularly saw her Nordic walking, cycling on her 16 speed or driving by in the L Train. She obtained her RN from the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax and a BN from Dalhousie University. After working in hospitals and public health, she embarked upon a career in nursing education, predominately at UNB Saint John where she was the first full-time Nursing faculty member and inaugural Chair of its Department of Nursing. Subsequently, and in order to succeed in the academy, she completed an MScN (U of T) and a PhD (UNB). Her true passion in nursing was home care and those who laboured there, especially family caregivers and home support workers. She pursued this focus through an active research agenda and related advocacy efforts. Several honours recognized her contributions and achievements over the span of her career, including the UNB President's Medal of Excellence (2009), an Honorary Life Membership in the NB Home Support Association (2007) and a Lawrence Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing (U of T) Distinguished Alumni Award, Award of Distinction (2014). Resting at Castle Funeral Home, 309 Lancaster Ave. Saint John, N.B. (634-1701). Visitation to be held Thursday 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. A mass of Christian burial will be held at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception on December 23 at 10 a.m. Interment will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Linda requested donations be made to Bobby’s Hospice or a charity of the donor’s choice. Online condolences can be made at www.Castlefh.com
