Jean Elizabeth (Bird) MACLEAN

Passed on: December 15th, 2017

It is with heavy hearts we say goodbye to our mother who passed away peacefully on December 15, 2017 with advanced Alzheimer’s disease. Born in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on December 15, 2017, she was the daughter of the late Bruce and Annie (Miller) Bird.
She is survived by her brothers, Richard (Marcia) and Donald (Joan) Bird; her adored nieces and nephews; husband, Neil; children, Laura (Ben Schelew), Charles (Kathy Shano), Bruce (Kim) MacLean, and seven wonderful grandchildren, Bailey, Arella, Rebecca, Taylor, Jacob, Nathan and Neil.
Jean was always passionate about helping others which led her to a long career in teaching. She was an alumnus of Sydney Academy (‘57), Kings College, Dalhousie and CBU. She taught at Hants West, Halifax Grammar School, Dartmouth Academy and widely throughout the Sydney School System as a substitute teacher while raising her family. She was an active volunteer with many community organizations; United Church Women, CFUW, Time Out, Every Woman’s Center, The Lyceum, Sydney Historical Society and Community Concerts. She loved books and literature and also served as a volunteer reading tutor to generations of students at her own kitchen table. She loved “slow” travel having crossed the Atlantic four times by sea and crossed the span of North America many more times by rail.
Jean will be forever missed as a kind, generous and gentle loving soul who was dedicated to her family and friends. A special thank you to her many wonderful friends like her book club who kept her involved even after she lost the ability to read and to those who continued to communicate and write long after she was unable to reply. Thank you to all her caregivers who helped to preserve her independence and dignity throughout the years and to St. Vincent’s Nursing Home and the PATH Clinic who bestowed comfort at the end of her journey.
In honor of Jean, please perform simple acts of kindness as often as you can and celebrate her memory with a nice cup of tea, a good book and a few daily laughs. Donations can be made to the CB Regional Library, Every Woman’s Centre, United Heritage Church, Canadian Cancer Society or the Alzheimer Society.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on December 27 at The United Heritage Church on Charlotte Street in Sydney.
