Margaret Molloy

Passed on: December 24th, 2017

In the early morning of December 24th, 2017 Margaret Molloy nee Murphy, passed peacefully away in the company of her loving family. Margaret was married to Kevin Molloy and the proud mother of Alexander and Patrick Molloy. Margaret was also mother to Jerry and William Wayne who were placed in adoption services shortly after they were born. She was mother to Robert, who grew up with her sister Johanna Gertrude Flynn. Margaret was a friend and a very special person to all who knew her. She has become one of the angels in heaven, and now gets to visit with her father, her husband Kevin, and her brother and sisters. Margaret had seven siblings. Her oldest sister, Mary, died as an infant. Margaret and her sisters Johanna, Gertrude, and Alice, were mostly raised by her oldest sister Kathleen and her brother Bill. Margaret's second brother, John, died as an infant. Louise Poole was raised by Lou's mother Mary Poole. Margaret was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Margaret is survived by her children Alexander, Patrick, Robert and possibly William Wayne (his status is unknown). She is also survived by her wonderful grandchildren Jason, Scott, Chrystal, Kyle, Kim, Kathryn, Max, Anne and Kathleen. Her story is a fascinating one. She was born November 21, 1931 in Brigus. Margaret was born with a condition called Talipes, also known as club foot. She was told she would never live a normal life, she would need help and support and would likely live in an institution most of her life. They were wrong about that. She faced the physical condition and any negative attitudes that came her way as a young girl and as a woman. She had determination, a friendly smile and a positive attitude that would make all challenges melt away. A club foot was not her only challenge in life. Her mother died on May 4th, 1934. She was just 2 ½ years old. While her father worked on the roads and did his best, she and her siblings practically raised themselves. It was a time when there was no money and their father could not travel far from home to provide for the family. They worked the land, raised chickens and goats, cut the wood, took care of the horse, made bread, picked berries, helped with the still, tended the crops, cut the hay, cooked the meals and slept huddled together in the loft of a small two room house on Cemetery Road just outside Brigus. It was a hard life of constant work and a little play, but they were the best of times. She wanted to go to school but after a few years, the little “cripple girl” was normally left behind and only managed to complete school to grade 4. She had several operations to help improve the use or reduce the handicap of her club foot. As soon as she could, she joined her sisters, searching for independence, finding work in private homes and in the Sanatorium in St. John's. Robert's time with Marg started on January 20th, 1955. Born at the Grace Hospital in St John's, he spent the first few months with her in a “girl's home”. Marg's brother Bill bought her a house out of money he made in the woods. The house was just down the lane from her father's house near Brigus. Robbie and Marg lived there for a few years. Margaret was determined to support herself but as a single mother with no work it was almost impossible to survive without a lot of family help. She had her sister Gertie take care of Robbie for brief periods of time and that eventually turned in to extended periods of time. PJ and Gertrude Flynn adopted Robbie in 1960 and they moved to Labrador City in 1961. Margaret was not far behind. By 1962 she was working at Jubber's in Labrador City as a short order cook. She would feed Robbie in the little diner until PJ got mad at her because Robbie wouldn't eat his supper. She went on to work at the IOCC Cafeteria (Crawley McCracklin) and continued to be a permanent fixture in Robert's life. In 1971, Margaret married Kevin Molloy and soon after they moved to Trepassey. Kevin worked on the boats and Marg once again asserted her independence by going to work, without Kevin's permission, in the fish plant. In Trepassey they built a beautiful life together, raising Paddy and Sandy and a lot of goats. In 1993 Jerry (Marg's first born) and Robert found each other. She told Kevin and Paddy and Sandy about Jerry and Robert. It all turned out great, since Kevin had not told Marg about his daughter Kim in Goose Bay! They had a great laugh and that day we all gained at least one more family member. Marg and Kevin spent most of their free time and their retirement time back in their 'cabin' on a little piece of her father's land, next to her brother Bill, in Brigus. They had come full circle right back to where they started. It the past few years, Paddy, Sandy and Elizabeth have been simply amazing, providing incredibly loving home care for Margaret every day as she slowly faded away. Even as her ability to communicate slipped away, Margaret remained the smiling, loving, beautiful, gentle, special lady we all loved. She will be remembered for her kindness and for her gentle determination to overcome all obstacles while making everyone around her feel comfortable and loved. Thank you Marg for the tough decisions you made, for the guidance you provided, for becoming a great role model as you handled adversity and challenges with love and compassion. You were an angel in life and you are an angel now. Resting at Fahey's Funeral Home in Trepassey on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 from 10 am - 9 pm.
