Peacefully, with two of his daughters by his side, the death occurred at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, of Thompson Irvine Knox, age 96. Born in Irvinestown, Northern Ireland, on November 1, 1921, Tommy immigrated to PEI in 1927 with his parents William and Eliza, later taking up residence at Knox's Dam where many happy memories were made. Tommy served as a gunner with the 8th battery, C troop, 2nd Heavy Anti-Aircraft Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery in Europe from 1941 until the end of WWII. Tommy married Lorna Jean Watts of York, P.E.I., in 1947. They settled in Sherwood and their house on Maple Avenue became home to nine children: George (Cathy), Linda, Billy (Elizabeth), Karen (Ken), Bethany, Mary (deceased) (Bob), Edwin (Alice), Dianne (John) and Sherilyn (Naomi). Tommy had sixteen grandchildren: Matthew, Jesse, Keturah, Laura, Melissa, Robin, Erin, Jamie, Meghan, Bethany, Claire, Katelyn, Georgie, Sean, Alissa and Eric, as well as sixteen great grandchildren. Tommy is survived by his sister Lilly (John, deceased), brother Richard (Janet) and sister-in-law Ethel. He is predeceased by his siblings Isabella (John), Robert and James. After returning from overseas Tommy began working for Maritime Electric where he was employed until his retirement in 1986. Tommy was a man well-known for his marvelous sense of humour, a large smile, hearty laugh and a sensitive spirit. His jokes were shared with friend and stranger alike and cheered up many people along his path. Tommy was an avid fisherman and a superb gardener. Being a generous man, the fruits of his labour were also shared with many. Tommy was a member of Park Royal United Church, the Masonic Lodge (Victoria Lodge #2 and Alexandra Chapter #11) and the Royal Canadian Legion. For the past eight and a half years Tommy was a resident at the Garden Home Long Term Care Facility, which he always referred to as his “Home Away from Home.” He was blessed with contentment and deep gratitude for the wonderful care he received on a daily basis. Tommy’s family would like to thank the Garden Home staff and the QEH emergency department staff for their compassionate care in their father’s final hours. Resting at Belvedere Funeral Home for visitation Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Park Royal United Church on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 2 p.m. Interment later in Floral Hills Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pat and the Elephant. The Charlottetown Branch No.1 of the Royal Canadian Legion will hold a Service of Remembrance at the funeral home on Sunday at 5:30 p.m. A Masonic Memorial Service will be held at Belvedere Funeral Home on Sunday at 8 p.m. for Brother Knox, his Brethren, relatives and friends.
