It is with loving and broken hearts that we the family, announce the passing of our father Lawrence Laffin, age 93, on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at the Northside General Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Born in Mill Creek on August 10, 1924, he was the son of the late Daniel and Mary (Marsh) Laffin He was a lifelong resident of the family home in Mill Creek. He is the last surviving member of his immediate family.
Dad was a devoted member of St. Joseph’s Parish, Bras d’Or. He worked in the coal mines and then for Marine Atlantic, until his retirement in 1989.
Dad loved sitting on the deck in the summertime watching the boats, surrounded by all his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Gert (Roland) Laffin; his sons, Greg (Betty), Doug, Anthony (Cathy), Hughie (Betty), Gerard (Michelle), Blaise (Jacqulyn), and his only daughter; Michelle (Joe Glen Carey). He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Lawrence was predeceased by his son, Glenn and his daughter-in-law, Rose; brothers, Gerald, Jim, Dan Joe, and Hilary; sisters, Mary, Katie, Agnes, Pearl, Laura, Marguerite and Beatrice; father and mother-in-law, Victor and Celina Roland; and many in-laws.
Special thanks to all Dad’s caregivers, homecare workers and all the VON nurses, especially Sherri Stewart, Dr. John Kirkpatrick, the nursing staff of 2 West at Northside General Hospital, and Fr. Peter McLeod for his visits.
Visitation for Lawrence Laffin will be held at J.M. Jobes Funeral Home, 635 Main St., Sydney Mines, on Sunday, January 7, 2018 from 2-4 & 7-9 p.m.
The funeral Mass will take place Monday at 10:30 a.m. at St Joseph’s Church, Bras d’Or with Fr. Peter McLeod officiating. A reception will follow in Bras d’Or Hall on Villa Dr.
Donations in Lawrence’s memory may be made to St Joseph’s Parish cemetery fund or a charity of choice.
