Greg Nicholas SMYTANIUK
Dec 3, 1952 – January 3, 2018
Gregory Nicholas Smytaniuk was born Dec 3, 1952 in Prince Albert, SK. After the family moved from Meath Park into Prince Albert, Greg lived there until he moved to Saskatoon in the mid 1990’s. He stayed in Saskatoon, working for Boardwalk, until his retirement in December of 2014. In 2016, he made the decision to move back to Prince Albert to be closer to family and to enable him to be of more assistance to his mother. Greg passed away suddenly on January 3, 2018 at home in the same quiet, simple way he lived his life. He asked nothing of others and was always willing to help anyone who needed it. Greg was predeceased by his father John Smytaniuk; his maternal and paternal grandparents and several aunts and uncles. Greg is survived by his mother Olga Smytaniuk; his brother Maurice Smytaniuk and wife Marlene Cooper; brother Brian Smytaniuk and wife Carolyn; his nephew Shaun and nephew Kyle and wife Hailey; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins. In his retirement, Greg spent his time helping his family, watching a couple of his favorite sports: baseball and basketball, as well as getting out to the gym, joining a darts league and in the summer golfing with family and friends. He takes with him the knowledge that he is the Smytaniuk Open Champion for 2017, something the brothers all tried hard to win, but never managed to do as often as Greg did!
He will be missed for his dry sense of humor that was always beneath the surface, but most of all for his willingness to help and support others and popping up when least expected.
A man of great and subtle character, Greg’s absence will be felt by those who held him dear; he was a rock to lean against in hard times and a source of strength for those found without.
