Joseph Gerard Kavanagh
Passed peacefully away in Ottawa on January 9, 2018, in his 96th year. Predeceased by his wife Theresa (Fitzpatrick), parents Joseph and Bridget (Walsh), sisters Margaret (Jim) Murphy and Kay Pittman, and brothers Frank, Ern and William. Left with loving memories in Ottawa are his daughters Maureen Kavanagh (Meg Milne), Joanne (Kevin) Hayes and grandchildren Cameron, Duncan and Mallory Hayes. In St. John’s, Joe is missed by nephew John Kavanagh and niece Peg (John) Shea, cousin Patsy Philpott and her husband Jack, and in-laws Mary (Bill) Snow, Carmel and John Murphy and Bernadette (Jack) White, and special family friend Sheila Murray. He is also remembered by sister-in-law Sheila (Michael) Fitzpatrick in Cornwall, Ont., and many nieces and nephews. Joe found much pleasure in family, friends, nature, music and life-long learning. He especially enjoyed the time spent with family at the cabin he built. He deeply loved Newfoundland and was also blessed to spend the last 11 years in Ottawa, where he enjoyed the role of Granddad – he took a keen interest in the activities of Cameron, Duncan and Mallory, enriching their lives with advice, love and humour. Joe’s gentle strength, his dependable ways, his wisdom and his subtle humour were treasured by all who knew him. The funeral occurred on January 12 in Ottawa, and interment will follow at a later date at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in St. John’s.
