It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of Byron Godfrey MacPhee, 84, of Howie Centre, on Tuesday, January 16, 2018 at Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
Born in Port Morien, he was the son of the late William and Sarah MacPhee.
Byron worked at Eastern Transport for 25 years and was a school bus driver for the Cape Breton Regional School Board until he retired. He was known for his musical talents; being a self-taught fiddle player and passing on his skills to fiddle and guitar students over the years. He played for many well-known musicians, such as Webb Pierce, Red Sovine, Tommy Hunter and Bill Munroe. Byron was best known for his time with The Ranch Boys and was famous for the ‘Orange Blossom Special.” Byron along with that band received an East Coast Music Award. He enjoyed spending time and playing checkers with friends and family.
He is survived by daughter, Darlene (Bob) Csernyik; son, Byron (Lavernne); brother, William (Jenny); grandchildren, Robby and Christopher Csernyik; in-laws, Bertha Duffney, Carol and Bobby Peters, Noreen MacIntyre, Ada MacPhee, and by many nieces and nephews.
Byron was predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Hazel, and sisters, Rose MacDougall, Evelyn Steele, Anita Wilson and Mary Ursula Morrison, Audrey in infancy; brothers, George, Ephie, Kenny, Bobby, Reggie, Stephen and Alex, and brothers-in-law, Gordon Duffney and Mickey MacIntyre.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the staff at Harbourstone Enhanced Care.
Visitation for Mr. MacPhee will be Friday, January 19 from 6-9 p.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel. Funeral service will take place on Saturday, January 20 at 11 a.m. at T.W. Curry Parkview Chapel with Fr. Norman MacPhee officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or a charity of choice.
