Cheek, Thelma Joyce(Smith), of Hopewell passed on January 22, 2018 after a dignified battle with Alzheimer's disease. Her firm faith supported Thelma in this journey and ultimately gave her peace. Thelma is reunited with her beloved husband (and resident humorist), Ronald, her siblings Douglas (Gus) Smith and Phyllis Cameron and parents Hugh Lindsay and Susie Ethel (Beale) Smith who pre-decease her. Her spirit is carried on by her children, Terry (Sherry) and Lynn (Andrew), and the grandchildren she loved with all her heart, Oliver and Dylan (Kendal), nieces and nephews.
Thelma was born on Feb 9, 1929 in Hopewell where she lived most of her life. She attended Maritime Business College and worked in federal public service until she married in 1957 to devote her life to family. She was a member of the Rebekah Lodge. She was accomplished at sewing, crossword puzzles and enjoyed many a card game. Thelma and Phyl supported each other when they both lost husbands to cancer in 1994 and were both diagnosed with dementia in 2006. She's remembered for her sense of humor, generosity and for living into the Lord's teachings to the best of her ability. Those who have taken her lessons to heart will always find reasons to laugh, see no value in judging others and live life true to themselves, with grace and forgiveness.
The family would like to thank her home and long-term caregivers. Thanks to Magnolia staff who were always there to laugh and sing along with Mom. Their dedication to the Eden Alternative enriched mom's life.
