Malcolm ‘Malcie’ Alexander MacDonald
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Malcolm ‘Malcie’ Alexander MacDonald, 77, on January 28, 2018. Surrounded by his loving family and friends, he passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with cancer in the Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital. Born on April 22, 1940 in Glace Bay, Nova Scotia, Malcie was the son of the late Malcolm and Annie MacDonald (McCuish).
Malcie was a hard worker and dedicated his time to his family and friends. He worked at National Sea, S&L Railroad, Coke Ovens, Sydney Steel Plant, Marconi Campus, Adult Training Vocational Centre and retired from the Department of Education as an Apprenticeship Counsellor in 2001.
Despite his working career spanning throughout many years as an electrician, he was able to enjoy a well-deserved retirement where he lived life to the fullest. Perhaps his most enjoyed passion was time spent in his summer residence in Tarbot (The Country) where he and his loving wife Donna entertained countless family members and friends. Malcie was a devoted citizen of Louisbourg and was often referred to as ‘Doctor MacDonald’ whereby he would drop everything to help anyone, at any time and place. He was a member of the Lions Club (former member), Masonic Lodge, Gaelic Choir, First United Church Choir, a faithful member, and actively involved in the First United Church. He had a strong passion for all sports, athletics and loved the game of hockey. He retired his skates in 2016 and believed that the ‘game of hockey’ and the ‘game of life’ had many similarities.
Malcie will be remembered for his wit, humour, charm, and his open arms by welcoming anybody to come to the garage for a drink and a chat. He will also be remembered for his extremely positive attitude in all situations that he carried with him till the end. He was always interested in every aspect of everyone’s life and extremely proud of his children and grandchildren. He would greet everyone with, “How ya gettin’ on”. He was a loving husband, father, poppy, brother, uncle and friend to many who will live on with the fondest memories.
Malcie is survived by the love of his life and wife, Donna (Cross) of 55 years; his sons, Tracy (Jo-Ann), Mira, Curtis (Lynn), Prince George, BC, and daughter, Ann Marie (Jason Bartlett), Barrie, Ontario. Also, his grandchildren, Katelyn, Matthew, Kelsey (Tyler), Craig, Jenna and Liam. He is also survived by his brother, Bruce (Rovie), countless nieces, nephews and life-long friends. His dog Chrissy will miss him dearly.
Visitation will be held at The First United Church in Louisbourg on Thursday February 1, 2018 from 2 p.m.-4 p.m. and 7 p.m.-9 p.m. A celebration of life will be held at The First United Church on Friday February 2, 2018 at 2 p.m.
