It is with broken hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and brother. Andrew Roy MacKinnon, 82 who passed away peacefully at the CBRH, on Thursday, February 22, 2018, surrounded by his loving family.
Born in Sydney Mines on August 27, 1935, Dad was the son of the late John and Nelda (Roy) MacKinnon. Dad’s greatest joy and love of his life was his family. Many of our favorite memories were spent in Mira Gut at our family cottage, singing, playing guitar around camp fires, but also best of all was playing cards, such as tarbish; he had a competitive nature. He loved to play cards with his friends throughout the week for years as well.
Dad was a devoted member of the Knights of Columbus & Sydney Mines Pensioners Club, an avid announcer for Sea Lanes and St Pius X Church Bingo. He participated throughout his life in many community events, functions, and fundraisers, as well as enjoyed political and social endeavors. Dad worked for Cape Breton Development Corporation until his retirement.
He will be sadly missed by his loving children, Andrew Jr (Evelyn), their children: Brehanna (Russell) Smith & Andrea (Brandon Boudreau), Shaun (Karen), their children: Kristy (Jeff Hall), & Julia (TJ Marsh), and Terry, her daughter: Jamie. Also surviving are one great-grandchild whom he adored, Charleigh; brother, Frances (Louisa) MacKinnon; sister-in-law, Sandra Connolly; and many nieces and nephews.
Dad is predeceased by our mom, Agnes (Woodford) MacKinnon; parents, John & Nelda MacKinnon; his sisters, Johnena, Annrita, Margaret, Jeannie, Florence, Jimima, & Madonna; brother, Archibald and Marie in infancy.
There will be no visitation. Cremation has taken place.
A celebration of Dad’s life will be held Monday, February 26, 2018, at 10 a.m. at Holy Family Church, Sydney Mines, with Rev. Jim Oliver officiating.
The family would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Northside General and Cape Breton Regional Hospitals - 4C and Palliative Care Unit for all their excellent care over the past week. We are forever grateful to each and every one of you.
Words of comfort may be forwarded to his family at www.jmjobesfuneralhome.com.
