It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Russell Bennett on the day of his 96th birthday, March 14, 2018, with his family by his side.
Russell was born March 14, 1922 in Sydney Mines to Arthur and Margaret (Boyd) Bennett.
Having worked in construction his whole life, Russell worked with MR Chappell, Maritime Builders, and Sullivan and Sons. Russell was an adherent and former choir member of St. Columba United Church in Leitches Creek. Following his retirement, he spent countless hours in his barn working on various woodworking projects for family and friends. Russell was an avid sports fan. His love of baseball and hockey was second to none. He enjoyed following the Montreal Expos, Toronto Blue Jays and the New York Rangers. He would often get so into the games that you would think he was in the stands. In his younger years, Russell played on the Rough Riders baseball team. He later passed on his love of sports to his children and grandchildren. He was their biggest fan. Russell was also a musician along with his siblings. He played the mandolin in the Country and Western band, Wilfred and the Rough Riders. He thoroughly enjoyed listening to fiddle music even up until his final days.
Russell is survived by his wife of 69 years, Helen (MacInnis) Bennett. Besides his wife, Russell is survived by his six children, Darrell (Mona), Sydney Mines, Gary (Lynn), Sydney, Vaughn (Lamduan), Thailand, Darren, Balls Creek, David (Elaine), Cheticamp, Denise, Kelowna, B.C. Russell is also survived by his twelve grandchildren who were his pride and joy, Cheryl, Chantel, Chelsea, Coady, Karen, Tyler, Joshua, Avery, Alex, Thomas, Taylor, Travis, Jaimee, and by seven great-grandchildren, Robert, Kelsey, Brayden, Brooke, Noah, Isla, and Gregory. Russell is also survived by his sister, Joan (Sonny) Guy; brother, Alex (Mabel); sisters-in-law, Grace Bennett, Muriel MacInnis and Marge MacInnis. He was predeceased by his brothers, Edgar, Wilfred, Roddie, Floyd, and Arthur; his sisters, Hulda, Sadie, and Phyllis; and his grandson, Gregory in infancy.
Visitation for the late, Russell Bennett, will be held on, Sunday, March 18, 2018 from 12-2 p.m. at Chant’s Funeral Home, 564 Alexandra St., Sydney.
A celebration of his life will take place immediately following at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.
Russell’s family would like to extend a sincere thank you to Dr. Hickey and Lori Ryan, as well as the Cape Breton County Homemakers, VON staff, and the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Palliative Care Team.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hospice Palliative Care Unit at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital.
