Born: April 30th, 1949

Passed on: April 3rd, 2018

It is with sadness that we, the family, regret to announce the passing of our beloved father, brother and grandfather, Edward Alphonsus Gillis, age 68, of Whitney Pier. He passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2018 at home.
Born on April 30, 1949 in South Bar, Eddie was the son of the late Jimmy and Lucy (Digou) Gillis.
Eddie is survived by his daughters, Ann Williams (Brion), Ontario and Dawn Mombourquette (formerly Kent), Sydney; grandchildren, Corey, Brenden and Kristin Mombourquette, Sydney and Marlena, Kathleen, and Annelise Williams, Ontario; sisters, Deanie Bona and Emily Keough of Sydney and MaryAnn (Russell) White, Jackie (Wayne) Pinhorn, Helen McLennan and Mabel (Doug) Au Coin of South Bar; longtime friend, Catherine McLean and mother of his children, Sister Nichols.
Eddie started working at the steel plant at 17 years old, went to Vocational school for diesel mechanics, and then enjoyed retirement. Proud to be a South bar boy, he was known as a protector of his sisters. He was very old school, lived a quiet life after he retired and was an animal lover.
Eddie’s family would like to thank the employees of First class delivery because he used them so much and they would stay and talk to him after making their delivery. All the drivers were just absolutely amazing to him.
Visitation and funeral service to celebrate the life of Edward Alphonsus Gillis will be held at Pier Community Funeral Home, 1092 Victoria Rd. (entrance on Church Street) on Saturday, April 7, 2018.
A gathering of family and friends will take place from 10-11 a.m. with service to follow at 11 a.m. in the All Faith Chapel with Fr. Paul McGillivray officiating. Light refreshments will be served in the funeral home reception area following the service. Interment will take place in St. Alphonsus Cemetery, Victoria Mines, NS.
Donations in memory of Eddie may be made to a charity of one’s choice.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted to the care and direction of Pier Community Funeral Home.
