Rose Marie Stephens

Passed on: April 9th, 2018

Rose Marie Stephens (Ross) passed away peacefully, at home with her family, on Monday, April 9, 2018. Born October 20, 1936, at home, Marie was the youngest of nine children of parents, Mamie (Brown) MacEachern and Jon (Rusu) Ross.
Marie was the last of her siblings to pass. Raised in Sydney`s Whitney Pier in the shadow and grit of the Steel Plant, Marie was wooed by Sydney plumber, Ray Stephens and they were married in 1953. With Ray, her husband, a contractor, his work took them, in the early years, to Elliot Lake, ON and Point Tupper, NS. As the years went by, they raised six children on Cartier Street in Sydney’s Ashby district and from 1969, Woodill Street on Hardwood Hill.
Marie took her greatest joy from the simple pleasures in life. Summers at the bungalow in Mira and, of course, Bingo. Mom could be seen carrying her Bingo bag with a full array of colorful dabbers all over Sydney. Of late, Mom even took a liking to radio bingo on Sundays, while at home. Heaven forbid talking while the game was on. Mom was fortunate, in her later years, to travel with friends and family. Mom loved her tea. A cuppa tea for Mom was a staple in life for her. The tea pot was always on and she always had a cup at the table chatting with friends, family and even strangers, having a laugh, no doubt telling a few jokes. With Marie there was always room at the table for one more and, if she didn’t have the room, she’d make it. Marie`s family came first in every aspect. Their happiness and welfare was her happiness. Children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her pride in life. Marie’s upbringing by her iron willed and strong hearted parents instilled in her a fierce pride in her Whitney Pier roots. For years, Marie was an Avon top seller and relished the give and take of home based sales and became a president`s club recipient many times over. How much Skin So Soft can a person have?!?!? The past year, a new little gangster came into Mom’s life named Teddy, whom she loved dearly. That little dog brought new life to Mom. The last several months, at home ice cream was Mom’s go to. The freezer was stocked with every possible flavor (except chocolate of course).
Marie is survived by her children, Blair, Kevin, Darcy (Lisa), Michele (Chris), Raymond, Raylene (Bernie); grandchildren, Blair Jr., Anne Marie, Diana, Bradley, Mitchell and Trevor; great-grandchildren, Jeff, Leia, Roman, Andrej and Max, and numerous nieces, nephews and many close friends. Marie was absolutely loved by everyone who met her.
No visitation as per Marie’s request. Cremation has taken place. Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ the King on Friday, April 13 at 2 p.m., with Rev. Glen Kent officiating. Interment in Hardwood Hill Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Palliative Care at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital Foundation.
There are so many thank yous to mention. Special recognition goes to her care workers (Kathy, Alison and Tammy) who became like family. They sat with Mom to ensure she was never, ever alone over the past several months, bringing her special treats. Sales of Tim Horton’s tea will be dropping. Thank you to the staff of Palliative Care and EHS. You all are exceptional people.
Marie was predeceased by her husband, Ray, who, having gone first, put the kettle on. Marie… your tea is ready.
Words of comfort can be sent to the family at www.sydneymemorialchapel.ca or e-mail sydneymemorialchapel@ns.sympatico.ca.
